D’où l’idée, pour le vingtième anniversaire de sa mort, de réunir ces deux titres en les enrichissant de documents inédits : plans ayant servi à leur élaboration, carnets de notes manuscrites, photos, interviews de l’auteur expliquant la genèse de ses deux romans les plus célèbres…
Dans L’Humeur vagabonde, Benoît Laborie quitte femme et enfants pour tenter fortune à Paris. Rastignac triste, il s’égare dans le cimetière du Père-Lachaise. Quand il retourne au pays, sa mère le prend pour un amant de sa femme et tue l’épouse supposée infidèle. Maintenant Benoît peut revenir à Paris. Parce qu’on flaire sur lui l’odeur du crime, la capitale s’offre à lui. Pas pour longtemps. Un nouveau caprice du tout-Paris, et il est rejeté. Une fable comique et triste, une petite musique aigre-douce au ton inimitable.
Un singe en hiver, lui, a pour cadre un hôtel de la côte normande tenu par Albert Quentin, ancien fusilier marin en Extrême-Orient, et sa femme Suzanne. Le jeune publicitaire Gabriel Fouquet y débarque pour rendre visite à sa fille Marie, pensionnaire dans le village, mais aussi pour oublier l’échec de sa vie sentimentale avec Claire, partie vivre à Madrid. Gabriel et Albert n’ont pas « le vin petit ni la cuite mesquine » : grâce à l’ivresse, ils vont s’offrir, l’un en Espagne et l’autre en Chine, deux glorieuses journées d’évasion.

L’Humeur vagabonde is the story of Benoît Laborie, who leaves his wife and children in order to try his luck in Paris. A sad Rastignac, he loses his way in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. When he returns home, his mother takes him for a lover of his wife and kills the supposedly unfaithful spouse. Benoît can return to Paris. Now that he gives off a criminal air, the capital city opens itself up to him. But not for long. A new caprice of all-Paris and he is rejected. A sad and comic tale, this is a small, bittersweet novel written in an inimitable tone.
Un singe en hiver is set in a hotel on the coast of Normandy, which is kept by Albert Quentin, a former mariner of the Far-East, and his wife, Suzanne. Gabriel Fouquet, a young advertising executive, arrives there to visit his daughter, Marie, who studies in the village’s lodging school, but also to try to forget the failure of his love life with Claire, who left to live in Madrid. These two men don’t drink like amateurs: thanks to the amounts of alcohol they will offer themselves two glorious journeys of escape, Gabriel in Spain and Albert in China. Awarded the Prix Interallié (1959), the book has been adapted for the screen and performed by Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo. The years following its publication, it has been translated in the United States, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Yugoslavia. Today, the translation rights for these countries are available again.
The only child of bohemian parents, Antoine Blondin (1922-1991) has been highly regarded since the publication of his first book, L’Europe buissonnière, which was awarded the Prix des Deux Magots in 1949. Dividing his time between journalism (he is known for having covered the Tour de France from 1950 to 1980) and literature, this "bon-vivant" left behind him five novels, all of which have been published by La Table Ronde.
