Presentation
To recount Marcel Proust’s life with all its enigmas and absences : such is the purpose of this biography, which explores the intellectual and personal journey of the writer of In Search of Lost Time. Documents found in private collections, interviews and former research work are summoned here to place both the man and his work in their historical context (the third Republic, the Dreyfus affair, World War One), and the artistic and literary fever so typical of the time. Marcel Proust, a biography renders the flow of a deeply singular existence, upon which tragedy left its mark, and explains how Proust’s work was created with a feeling of urgency, in a race against death.
Michel Erman, a professor at the Université de Bourgogne and a philosopher, has written several books on Marcel Proust, such as Bottins proustiens (La Table Ronde, 2016) and Les cent mots de Proust (PUF, 2013).
